Ylang Ylang tree or Cananga odorata is native to the rain forests of some south-east Asian countries and is much valued for the exotic fragrance of its flowers. This tree belongs to the family Annonaceae and can grow to a height of around forty feet. It has glossy green leaves that are oval in shape and have pointed tips. The flowers are star-shaped with six long petals, that are greenish-yellow in color. The drooping flowers of this tree can be even pink in color. It is from the fresh flowers of ylang ylang tree that different grades of essential oil are produced through the process of steam distillation. Even though, it is considered to be safe, this oil may cause side effects, like, nausea, headache and sensitivity.
